Last month, Park Rangers and volunteers planted over 400 trees and nearly two acres of native wildflowers at Westmoreland State Park. Groups of less than 10 people were formed throughout the park to remain in compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidance

These native trees, provided by We Plant Trees (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization), will greatly benefit the local ecosystem and provide enjoyment for many years to come.

Trees were placed throughout the park, many of which will produce beautiful spring flowers or fall colors. Red maple, white oak, black locust, redbud, and dogwood trees were the primary species planted.

Funded by a $20,000 grant through Dominion Energy, Westmoreland State Park will be starting a beekeeping program in the near future. Along with the program, there will be an outdoor education exhibit and opportunities for hands-on learning.

Rangers carefully spread wildflower seeds to rejuvenate meadows to provide bees with a bountiful source of nectar and pollen for the primary season. The wildflowers will drastically enhance the already beautiful park, while providing honeybees and native pollinators food sources throughout Westmoreland State Park's over 1,300 acres.
