Getting to Know Virginia: Caledon State Park Part 2
When you visit Caledon State Park, head slowly to the beach along the Potomac River. It is wild and you should not swim here, but enjoy some knee deep wading in spots, and explore the endless and aged collection of driftwood along its length.
Caledon State Park is an amazing place to photograph, and like several other Virginia State Parks, you can find fossil sharks’ teeth, fossil shells, and even crocodile teeth along the beach among the pebbles.
They have a popular event where you get to kayak the coast, then beach your kayak and get tips from a Ranger on finding fossils. We did this and had a great time.
We met so many nice people at that event, and we laughed that the most skilled fossil finder was a 6 year old girl named Madison. Can I just say, I credit her young eyesight as she found shells, several sharks' teeth, and was the only one of us to find a crocodile tooth.
The beach wraps around a beautiful marsh at one end where we saw the resident bald eagles. On a cliff above the beach, is a lovely wooded picnic area with a great view of the Potomac River, but I'm fine having lunch right along the shore. It's too beautiful not to be near it, as eventually you must leave. I always look back, hating to leave that shoreline. That and the forest, is my definition of a place of peace. Know this for certain, this is a great park for decompressing from real life.
Go for fall color. Go in all seasons. There are few forest walks in all of Virginia like this one. There are also few beaches so defined by its maze of driftwood gifted by the Potomac River.
This Artist from the most recent Plein Air event at Caledon State Park. The beauty of this place lends itself to enriching activities where you delve into self, inner peace, and viewing the world through Mother Nature's eyes.
Visit this little known place, and you'll return home mentally refreshed.
