Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

This year Virginia State Parks will again offer free park admission to everyone on Veterans Day, November 11, as a way to thank our Veterans and to reflect on our gratitude for the sacrifices they have made for our freedom.

Come out to Douthat, Shenandoah River, Twin Lakes, and Westmoreland state parks to write a thank you or make a card for a veteran or deployed soldier. Belle Isle, First Landing, Lake Anna, and Powhatan state park are collecting food or supplies for veterans or deployed military. Holliday Lake State Park is offering a special geocache for one week only in honor of Veterans Day. 

Leesylvania State Park would love to help you honor your hero. Bring in a photograph, the story of their service, and how they inspire you and the park will post these tributes on a temporary Wall of Honor set up in the Visitor Center. Submiisions will be accepted starting November 9. At Natural Tunnel State Park join members from several branches of military, young and old, in a War Memorial program. Meet with local veterans, and hear their stories of valor and service for this country at New River Trail State Park. Medals and uniforms will also be on display.

Bring old or tattered United States flags to Hungry Mother, Kiptopeke or Staunton River state parks and participate in a flag retirement ceremony.

Smith Mountain Lake and York River state parks will be closed on November 11 for managed deer hunts.
