Whatever they put in the water at James River State Park has energized me, from the brilliant sunrises to the rustling of the river alongside the primitive campground. I just can't get enough of this beautiful state park. I have chosen this park for our family vacation and weekend getaways for a few years now, and I am never disappointed.

In fact, each visit brings me more than I bargained for, and that is a good thing.

No matter what time of the year I visit James River State Park I find a lack of crowds. It must be the way the park is laid out that is conducive to spreading us out evenly. Yes, the river is a popular, destination, with visitors fishing, canoeing, and tubing, but there is always plenty of elbow room. If you have never been, I highly recommend James River State Park for an incredible getaway.

Here are five things to love about James River State Park

1 | The River: There is a seasonal canoe livery which rents kayaks, canoes and tubes to float the river, or to shuttle you back with your own equipment. But even if you are here in the off season, it is so enjoyable to meander down by the river and listen to it rambling by.

The river is the lifeblood of this park, you are drawn to it like a feather upon the water.

2 | The Meadows: Most people don't typically envision of meadows when they think of this park, so they are in for a treat. The meadows at this park fill with wildflower blooms and the fluttering wings of butterflies. You can see rabbits, deer and other wildlife emerge from the meadows when the sun begins to set.

These meadows make for beautiful backdrops to your visit.

4 | The Overlook: You can hike to it, bike to it, or catch a ride on a wagon as part of a neat park program. However you get to the Tye River Overlook, just do it. You will be greeted by breathtaking scenery any time of day, but if you can, try to catch the sun as it dips behind the Blue Ridge Mountains.

There are a couple of benches at the Tye River Overlook for you to sit upon and absorb the beauty of the mountains.

5 | The Wildlife: Bears, deer, turkey, rabbits down to the smaller critters like this newt can be found all over the park. There is plenty of food for the wildlife, like the native pawpaw that grows along the trail near the river.

Be sure to slow down and look around, you might spot things that you would normally overlook.
