Five Things No One Needs to Miss at Grayson Highlands
Shared by Autumn Roe, as Guest Blogger.
Grayson Highlands State Park is nestled high above in the Appalachian Mountains. Through my many trips to Grayson Highlands State Park, I have backpacked on the Appalachian Trail, as well as many of the other trails at this park. I have gotten to experience all the greatness that this park has to offer.
Here are five of the many wonderful things that this park contains:
1. It is most famously known for its wild ponies. The Rhododendron Trail is the main trail that will lead you to the ponies. You can walk right up to them. However, please do not pet or feed them.
Oh, the stories these ponies could tell
Each year starts a new generation of wild ponies
2. Grayson Highlands State Park is also known for having a trail right to the highest point in Virginia. Mt Rogers sitting at an elevation of 5,728 feet is the highest point in Virginia. The trail leading up to this point is fairly easy, and anyone can hike to the top and the park is even pet friendly, so you can take your dogs all the way to the top.
We believe that our pets deserve all the same experiences we have
3. Another thing that you do not need to overlook is the boulders. These large rocks at Grayson Highlands State Park are great for what is known as bouldering. Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is done without ropes or harnesses. If you are not the bouldering type, these huge rocks also have wonderful views of different mountain ranges. So the boulders can be for everyone.

Boulders are just as beautiful as they are adventurous
4. Grayson Highlands State Park is one that has diversity of plant life. From blueberry bushes lining the trails to wildflowers hidden in the meadows. You just have to keep a look out.
Because of the unique environment, plants are often different than the rest of Virginia
Blueberry bushes line the trails at the park
5. Last but not least is the view. Almost every trail at Grayson Highlands State Park has a beautiful view. However, you are not just seeing one view the whole time. Your line of sight changes the farther you hike in, and you are almost at the highest point in Virginia so you can see for miles.
Amazing scenery is everywhere you turn
The mountains are calling and you must go
