Fishing for rainbow trout

By Amy AtwoodPosted October 28, 2017

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you will find the 168-acre lake well known for summer fun and renowned for its incredible bass fishing, known as Fairy Stone State Park.

As the crisp air of fall moves in so do new recreational opportunities, Fairy Stone State Park isn’t just for summer fun.

Fishing has become one of the fall’s most popular activity, and as long as the lake isn’t frozen over, good fishing opportunities are available all year long.

For the last several years, park staff have worked with their Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries biologist to find ways to enhance the environment for fishing in the lake. After discussions with the biologist, the decision was made to begin stocking Rainbow Trout in Fairy Stone Lake. Although Rainbow Trout are not native to Fairy Stone Lake, they are one of the most popular sport fish.

In Virginia they have not been seen as a pest or a threat to native trout populations.

Once the water temperature drops consistently below 65 degrees, usually in late October, stocking will begin.

The first stocking for 2017 is on November 1st and will be followed by a second stocking a couple of weeks later. Each year, an estimated 1,300 lbs rainbow trout are added to Fairy Stone Lake.

The average size of the fish are between 12-14 inches long and weigh up to 5 lbs.

Catching a 5 pounder in the lake is an amazing experience, creating memories and stories that will be cherished for years to come. I think we all know that by the time that fisherman gets home, that 5 pounder probably grew to an 8 pounder but telling the tale is half the fun anyways.
