Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Tucked away in the woods at First Landing State Park is the rustic little 2 bedroom cabin 9, which is perfect for a fun weekend or week at the beach. This cabin provides privacy and that woodsy feel you expect from a cabin getaway, yet just a short walk or bike ride to the beach.

WELCOME TO THE CABIN

Welcome to the cabin, we're glad you're here come on in!

ABOUT

This cabin is a 2-bedroom 1 bathroom cabin that has a long driveway which provides ultimate privacy for its occupants. In style it is similar to all the cinderblock cabins with cedar siding, it has a screened-in porch with two rockers, and a tile floored living room area with plenty of windows. The cabin is not on the beach side of the park, but in the maritime woods across Shore Drive.

Like the other cabins at this park, there is a nice wood burning fireplace. You won’t want to use this in the heat of summer of course, but off-season it is a great amenity. The park provides the first bundle of firewood, and there may even be a book of matches and firestarter in the cabin. You can purchase more wood at the park (outside wood is not allowed to be brought in due to wood borer beetles).

The compact kitchen works well for a couple or small family. It is outfitted with everything you need for your weekend or week-long stay, just bring the food and beverage.

PETS

Pets are allowed to stay with you in the cabin, and this is one beach that dogs can also enjoy (as long as they are kept on a leash of no longer than 6 feet). There is a per-pet nightly charge to stay in the cabin with you. This is one of the more popular pet parks, your dog(s) will love it here.

COOL ANOMALY

The one thing I did notice at this cabin that I have not seen elsewhere was a flat screen TV. I learned this cabin is part of a pilot project, cabins 7-20 have TVs with built-in DVD players. No cable or antennas. This may be handy if you are stuck inside during a summer storm, or want to wind down the kids before bed after they have consumed too many s’mores.

FURNISHINGS

The cabin had a total redo in the furniture department last year and is quite comfortable. There are interesting oversized canvas prints on the walls that are photographs of the park. The master bedroom has a queen sized bed (with no footboard, I mention this if you are taller). The second bedroom has two sets of bunkbeds. Linens are there as are bath towels, dish towels and a starter dish soap.

BEST FEATURE

I was impressed with the amount of real estate outside the cabin to use for grilling, eating and hanging out. This is notable as I have stayed in other cabins at other parks that had very small or remote outdoor areas. Some had a picnic table that was right out front and zero privacy. This is a great feature at this cabin and worth noting. The area at this cabin is ideal for a family, couple or group of friends.

HELPFUL HINTS

1. There is a Grocery Store just a couple miles away to stock up once you get there. Unlike some state parks that are more isolated, this park has plenty of shopping nearby to fit your needs. (You probably knew that if you have been to the City of Virginia Beach).

There is also a pharmacy next to the grocery store, in case of bug bites, sunburns or jellyfish stings.

2. Go midweek. Really, the beach, the park, the cabins are less crowded midweek and you can really enjoy the park more than on a busy weekend. And remember the last minute cabin discount applies if you call on Thursday or Friday and there is a cabin available for that very weekend, then you save 25%. Only available by calling 800-933-PARK.
