Favorite Footbridges of Virginia State Parks
As a photographer, there is nothing more photogenic and romantic than a bridge. Bridges aren't just structures, many of them are an invaluable part of our history. When I stumble upon a bridge at a Virginia State Park I am always pleasantly surprised, and it really doesn't matter what type of bridge, all of them are unique, and some hold secrets from the past.
"Bridging the gap" comes to mind when I think of them. In locations with inclement weather, a bridge was the only way for families to gather for church when the rivers rose due to heavy rain or snowmelt. The American expression was born from this same sentiment "Lord willing and the Creek don't rise" and even songs were written about this.
When I hike I like to have a destination or discovery as part of the hike, like a scenic overlook, historical structure or bridge. Some of these little footpaths add to the experience.
