Four things you must do at Powhatan State Park!

Butterflies adorn the park.

Powhatan State Park is a place where you can experience the natural world we live in.

Virginia State Parks recently opened a new state park on the banks of the James River. Powhatan State Park is filled with the natural beauty of rolling hills and a meandering river bank. It’s a place where you can experience the natural world we live in.

Four things you must do while spending the day at the park:

Big Woods Trail

Big Woods Trail offers serenity under the trees where their
huge branches shade you from the sun.

Hike Big Woods Trail

This trail is one of the multi-use trails found in the park that is perfect for hiking and biking. It offers the user a diverse experience of adventuring through many aspects of the park. You’ll wonder at the fields of wildflowers and vegetation that once were fields of crops and feel the serenity under the trees where their huge branches shade you from the sun.

Perfect spot for a picnic.

If relaxation is what you need, bring your lawn chairs and kick back and watch the river run!

Park at the river’s edge and enjoy the beauty of the river

You’ll find a picnic shelter perfect for an afternoon lunch or snack. Bring a fishing pole and fish from the river bank.  If you want relaxation with a view of the river, bring your lawn chairs and kick back and watch the river run!

Playground area.

Kids will find plenty of things to climb on, slide down and swing on or from!

Swings anyone?

If you have children who love to play, this park has a playground for you.  Your family will find plenty of things to climb on, slide down and swing on or from! Parents will enjoy the shaded picnic area and close restrooms. From the playground area, you can even jump on the Cabin Trail for a quick hike.

Explore the E. Floyd Conservation Area

Named after a local conservationist, E. Floyd Yates, this site is where three trails intersect. Big Woods Trail, Pine Trail and Cabin Trail offer a unique hiking and biking experience for all ages. Parking and picnic tables are available at the conservation area.  Don’t leave your camera at home.

Powhatan State Park is the newest of the 36 state parks and is still undergoing metamorphosis. But don’t let that deter you from visiting this gorgeous undisturbed park. Its eye-popping beauty and unexplored trails will heighten your adventure. So come out and visit Powhatan State Park; you’ll be glad you did!

Because of traffic concerns regarding the Maidens Rd. and Old River Trail intersection, RVs and horse trailers are prohibited at the park until further notice. Work is underway with VDOT to improve the intersection.

The park is located at 4616 Powhatan State Park Road in Powhatan County.
