When you think of state parks, several things come to mind, including souvenirs. Who doesn’t want to take home a little something to remind you of your stay – or as a small gift for someone at home?

You can find souvenirs at all our parks and usually something extra. At the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park you can find unique items featured in our museum shop's Artisan Gallery.

We are fortunate to have access to a number of fine craftsmen in the region. Works of art including quilted wall hangings, beautifully turned wooden bowls, unique jewelry and stained glass décor as well as pottery fired in vibrant colors are all available in the gallery. Be sure to check back often as the selection does vary from season to season.

The park also carries items related to the history of southwest Virginia. We have several quilt-related items for sale, including a book titled “Quilts of Virginia, 1607-1899,” by the Virginia Consortium of Quilters. This beautifully illustrated guide features several of the quilts in the museum’s collections.

Music plays a large part in the history and culture of the region and we carry CDs by a variety of musicians in our shop, as well as unique cast metal instrument miniatures. T-shirts from the past several years of the park’s annual Gathering in the Gap Music Festival are available.

For those who like history books, the museum carries the works of Dr. Lawrence Fleenor, a retired medical doctor who is an active volunteer at the museum. Dr. Fleenor is an authority on Southwest Virginia history and leads a number of historic bus tours throughout the region; his books cover everything from the settlement of the region through the coal boom of the early 20th century.

Anyone who has read the book or seen the movie “Big Stone Gap” is familiar with the name of Adriana Trigiani. The nationally-known author grew up just across the street from the museum and we carry her complete set of authored works, as well as “Big Stone Gap” movie t-shirts and mugs.  We also carry books from other local authors, both fiction and non-fiction.

Fun trinkets include items made from coal, a wide variety of t-shirts and other clothing, and of course treats like fudge and snack mixes, all made in Virginia, are also available.

No time to tour the museum? Just come by the shop - you won’t be charged admission.

The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park is open every day through Labor Day. Check here for hours.
