Beautiful Belle Isle State Park is located along the scenic Rappahannock River on Virginia's Northern Neck. Although we did not paddle on this visit, we explored the park and made great plans for a paddle in the spring!

AHHHH

On this beautiful winter's day we visited three different Virginia State Parks on the Northern Neck of Virginia. When we arrived at Belle Isle State Park, there was a general consensus of "Ahhhh!" From creek to river to lowland marsh, there was so much to explore! We found the playground, the picnic area, the beach with driftwood, the boardwalk at the boat launch where we saw water fowl, the trails and more were a huge draw for us. We were impressed with this park, and will be back, no doubt about it!

ABOUT

Located in the rural Northern Neck of Virginia, Belle Isle (PDF) is the first state park to be purchased with funds from the $95 million 1992 Parks and Recreational Facilities Bond Referendum. The 733-acre site is a window to the beautiful lower Rappahannock River in Lancaster County. Waterfront in the area has been developed extensively by private landowners with little public recreational access. This fact made the lower Rappahannock a priority for purchasing land for a new state park. The park has seven miles of frontage on the north shore of the Rappahannock, and it borders Deep and Mulberry creeks. It features diverse tidal and nontidal wetlands, lowland marshes, tidal coves and upland forests.

WILDLIFE

The diverse habitats found in the park provide homes to many predator birds, such as blue herons, osprey, hawks and bald eagles. White-tailed deer, turkeys, groundhogs, rabbits, squirrels, moles, reptiles and amphibians are also common. There are eight distinct types of wetlands within the park. These diverse ecosystems make Belle Isle an excellent outdoor laboratory for environmental education.

OVERNIGHT

Camping and Belle Air Mansion and Belle Air Guest House are available for overnight stays, more here. There are no cabins at this state park.

DRIVE TIME

RECOMMENDATION

I recommend the beautiful Belle Isle State Park for fishing, kayaking, biking, birdwatching, camping, BYO equestrian trail riding, picnicking, nature walks and exploring (PDF). You can rent kayaks, canoes, bikes and more by the hour at Belle Isle State Park. There is not a designated swimming beach at this park, so you will need to be creative if you want to cool off! (Also be warned of sea nettles and other jellies in the water from the Chesapeake Bay.)

There is a fantastic Marsh Exploration Walk with signage and information on the creatures that live in this unique ecosystem. I will highlight this walk on another article with more photos. Stay tuned for that...
