Each summer, YCC engages 200 youth in state parks throughout Virginia, accomplishing astounding projects in the form of trail maintenance, basic construction, and beautification of the parks.

Virginia State Parks are currently recruiting outgoing, adventure-seeking, hard-working individuals to serve as crew leaders in the 2018 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program. We are looking for positive-spirited YCC crew leaders with a sense of humor, looking to make a difference in the youth of Virginia.

We're seeking, hard-working individuals to serve as crew leaders in the 2018 Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program

WHAT'S A CREW?

Crews are comprised of three adult leaders and ten students between the ages of 14-17 for the duration of the 3-week YCC session. A week’s work will include projects such as restoration and preservation of the habitats in the parks, construction of picnic tables and benches, removal of invasive species, landscaping, etc.

Become a Crew Leader for the2 018 Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Crew leaders are responsible for all aspects of the crewmembers day to day activities; including scheduling, meal planning, chore assignments, and general wellbeing.

Leaders will engage these youth in work projects during the weekdays, schedule environmental education programs for weeknights, and plan adventure outings on weekends. Although the work can be grueling, crew leaders learn to juggle changing demands, make quick decisions, and take personal accountability for the success of their crews. Leaders are expected to maintain good communication with program and park staff while setting positive example for crewmembers.

Ideal candidates will display a problem-solving ethic; flexibility during trying times; and a strong dedication to make a positive impact on the lives of the youth. Leaders must be entering their junior year of college or equivalent post-secondary education/experience in fall 2018.

Leaders must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive a 15-passenger van.

MANDATORY TRAINING

We're now accepting applications for the 2018 crew leader position at Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps.

All crew leaders are required to attend the mandatory crew leader training at Twin Lakes State Park from Monday, 18 June 2018 through Thursday, 21 June 2018.

Applications for the 2018 YCC program are available now and are accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. Applicants can request which session(s) they would like to serve on their application but may not make specific park requests. Crew Leaders must arrive at their park the Thursday prior to the crewmember arrival date.

Lodging, meals, and transportation are provided upon arrival at the park.

Applicants must be entering their Junior (third) year of college as of fall 2018.

Session One: Thursday, 21 June 2018 through Saturday, 14 July 2018
Session Two: Thursday, 19 July 2018 through Saturday, 11 August 2018

WHAT YOU'LL EARN

Upon successful completion of the three-week program, crew leaders are awarded an $1800 stipend and a $350 travel stipend. Crew leaders working both sessions will receive the stipend at the end of each session.
