Wilderness Road State Park is one of the most unique parks in the Virginia state park system. Located on the western tip of Virginia, this history-based park has been highlighted nationally for their interpretation of the western frontier during the 1700’s. Volunteers have made a significant contribution to this success.

Volunteers become staff members

I recently asked Park Manager Bill Heck why the volunteers are so important to the park. He said, “Volunteers are more than important. Our volunteers are vital to the success of Wilderness Road State Park. They provide a wide demographic of knowledge and experiences as well as a variety of skillsets that are essential for a thriving park operation.”

The story of Wilderness Road and the western frontier is a story of strength and perseverance in our nation’s history. This park has an atmosphere that has been purposely created to drive volunteerism and the impact has been amazing. The park welcomes an expanse of knowledge and experiences and provides a sense of ownership and dedication. The passion for a nation’s history developed through volunteerism; that passion and dedication translates into a love for the park, its programming, and its guests.

This approach has resulted in careers being defined, and lifetimes are dedicated to worthwhile and impactful careers. Wilderness Road currently has four full-time staff members who began their careers as volunteers in the park. Plus, the entire Interpretive wage staff began as volunteers. The goal is to make them feel as if they have "come home" and have a hand in the longevity and growth of Wilderness Road State Park. And it has worked.

Each year, volunteers from across the United States and many European countries donate thousands of hours to ensure Wilderness Road State Park remains a jewel within the Virginia State Parks. We thank them for the valued time and dedication.
