Are You a Bird Nerd? Part 2 for our Park of the Month: Mason Neck
Think the only bird to see at Mason Neck State Park is our majestic American Bald Eagle?
Think again, if you are a "bird nerd" novice (like me) or an expert like fellow bloggers and staff, there are “birds a plenty” for all levels of interest!
Eastern Bluebird
Because of the hardwood forests, managed meadows, fresh water ponds, small lakes, streams, and abundance of insects; nesting birds and migratory birds find Mason Neck a very nice place indeed.
Red-headed Woodpecker
Great Blue Heron
The eagles, osprey, a variety of herons and even some hawks love to fish in the tidal marshes that consociate along the Potomac River. The shoreline trees provide a perfect perch for the birds to observe their prey and capture their breakfast, lunch and dinner!
Green Heron
Eastern Screech Owl
Evening on the “Neck” gives way to the sound of Barred Owls, Eastern Screech Owls and creatures of the night on the prowl the dense woods.
Pair of Mallard Ducks
Because of the year round food supply and the shelter marshes provide, we have had a few normally migratory guests like swans, mallard ducks and of course the ever present Canada Goose winter over at Mason Neck.
Mason Neck State Park offers bird hikes and educational programs on birds, click here for more information. Or if you would like to bird on your own, the visitor center can provide trail maps and information.
