One outdoor challenge per day is enough for most of us.  Maybe two if we go on a leisurely pace.  Imagine a competition or orienteering and racing by foot, bike, and paddle.  This is adventure racing.  On Saturday April 9th, hardy outdoor athletes put their skills to the test in a race sponsored by Hampton Roads Adventure at York River State Park.

The first portion of the competition was orienteering on foot.  Teams plotted their course using topographical maps and compasses to find specific locations.  While a portion of the event took place along well marked trails, competitors had to go off the beaten paths to reach their goals.

From there, the teams did a jog around Woodstock Pond to warm up to continue orienteering by bike.  The parks three mountain bike specific trails were designed to test the skills of pleasure and competitor bicyclist.  Some teams even rode on our most challenging trail, Marl Ravine.

The final leg of the race was by canoe and kayak.  While York River did supply some boats, competitors came with an amazing variety of watercraft from high end sea kayaks, light frame canoes, and a few that were purchased at yard sales.  Conditions on the river and Taskinas Creek were very good as the osprey watched the flotilla pass by their nest.

We are glad that Hampton Roads Adventure chose to compete here.  We hope that many other adventure racers and outdoor athletes will challenge themselves at York River.
