While each of the cabins at Westmoreland State Park, our park of the month for November, has something unique, I do have my favorite! Many years ago before I worked for Virginia State Parks we had a power outage in the Northern Neck.  The aftermath of an early winter storm knocked out electricity in homes across part of the 5 county area, but not the north end of Westmoreland County.  After a few days of not having hot water for showers, we decided to get a cabin at the park for a treat of hot running water!

Cabin #1

Cabin #1 was available.  It was love at first sight for this little log cabin that is one of the originals built by the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930’s.  The cabin is built just for two with an open floor design that has a fireplace in the bedroom.   There is a front porch complete with rocking chairs, perfect for wildlife watching.  This cabin has a long drive way which makes it very private.

The park has thirty-one cabins and one of our family lodge facilities. The fully equipped kitchens in each cabin makes cooking your favorite meal a breeze. Or, if you don’t feel like preparing a meal yourself, nearby Montross and Colonial Beach offer some of the best and most diverse restaurants in the “Neck”.

Winter's Walk

A Winter's Walk

For most cabins at Westmoreland State Park, trail heads are not far away and make for a wonderful walk any time of year.  Just make sure you bring your camera!  There are endless photo opportunities all through the park.

Cabins range from efficiencies (up to 2 people) like Cabin #1, one-bedroom (up to 4 people), and two-bedrooms(up to 6 people). There are the original CCC log cabins that have porches.  Cedar siding and board and batten cabins that have decks and screened porches.   All cabins have working fireplaces, kitchens and bathrooms. The cabins are located on the cliffs overlooking the Potomac River or situated in the woods surrounded by old growth trees.
