A waterview is just one of the perks at a handful of cabins at Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

With more than 300 cabins across the state, a handful of favorites feature incredible views from almost every window, including the water.

Here are seven Virginia State Parks with amazing cabins that are waterfront or waterview, and the good news is you can reserve them up to 11 months in advance. 

1. CLAYTOR LAKE STATE PARK - DUBLIN

A gorgeous swimming beach, hiking and picnicking, Claytor Lake is known for fishing and boating. The 15 cabins overlook the 4,500-acre lake, offering guests a scenic retreat. The park has a full-service marina with boat rentals and refreshments. You can also rent bikes and enjoy a universally accessible fishing pier, picnic shelters, a seasonal snack bar and playgrounds. The cabins and lodges also have dock access at Claytor Lake State Park so that you can tie up a boat during your stay or fish for bluegill.

2. SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE STATE PARK - HUDDLESTON

On one of the largest freshwater lakes in the state, this beautiful mountain lake is a water enthusiast's mecca. Water activities at this park include swimming, boat rentals, a boat ramp and a universally accessible fishing pier. Families love to picnic, explore the excellent visitor center, attend special nature programs, and hike or bike miles of trails. These waterfront cabins have boat docks. Unlike the other parks listed with fireplaces, Smith Mountain Lake State Park cabins offer neat little wood stoves. You'll find eight waterview cabins at this park.

3. FAIRY STONE STATE PARK - STUART

Home of the magical fairy stones, this park is well known for its 168-acre lake adjoining Philpott Reservoir. Fairy Stone State Park is a short drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are attractions, hiking trails, a great swimming beach, rowboats, canoes, paddleboats, kayaks, picnicking and playgrounds. Five cabins are waterview, and nine more provide a partial, limited view of the lake.

4. OCCONEECHEE STATE PARK - CLARKSVILLE

On the John H. Kerr Reservoir, known as Buggs Island Lake, Occoneechee State Park is popular with anglers and boaters. The marina offers a fuel dock and boat slips with water and electric service for annual rentals. The park provides 24-hour access to Virginia's largest lake. Three boat ramps open the door to 48,000 acres of fishing, boating and aquatic recreation. There are more than 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

5. WESTMORELAND STATE PARK - MONTROSS

On the Potomac River's Northern Neck, this park offers many opportunities for family fun. There's a visitor center, a playground, a fishing pier, boat rentals and six miles of trails. Fossil collectors enjoy hunting for ancient shark teeth along the Potomac. Offshore breakwaters are great for fishing. Birding enthusiasts find the park an excellent site for spotting American bald eagles, ospreys, kingfishers, great blue herons, common terns, green herons and gulls, as well as wintering waterfowl.

6. BEAR CREEK LAKE STATE PARK - CUMBERLAND

Everyone loves little Bear Creek Lake. It is set in the heart of the Cumberland State Forest in central Virginia. The park is less than an hour west of Richmond. Families, friends and groups enjoy activities in and around the 40-acre lake with a boat launch, fishing pier, boat rentals and a swimming beach. There are also fun park programs and playgrounds. Visitors enjoy the park's trails and access to the adjoining 16,000-acre Cumberland State Forest. 

  • Cabins 2, 4, 5, 11 and 12 are water-view.

7. TWIN LAKES STATE PARK - GREENBAY

This 548-acre historic park offers many cultural, environmental and recreational activities. Visitors enjoy a swimming beach, fishing, hiking, boating and lakeside picnicking. Also, the Cedar Crest Conference Center on Prince Edward Lake is available for weddings, family gatherings, retreats and business meetings.

BONUS: LAKE ANNA STATE PARK - SPOTSYLVANIA

At Lake Anna State Park, you'll find seven two-bedroom frame waterview cabins

At Lake Anna State Park, you'll find 7 two-bedroom frame waterview cabins.

The park has a swimming beach on one of Virginia's most active lakes, a fishing pond accessible to children and the disabled, a bathhouse-concessions complex and a boat launch. Also, the cabins have docks nearby to tie up. There are more than 15 miles of trails. Visitor center exhibits offer an insight into the history of the area's gold mining and highlight the park's natural features.

EXTRAS

Swimming is free for overnight guests. Boat launching is also free to overnight guests. Pets are allowed in cabins with their families for an additional nightly fee.

  • Keep pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet when not in an enclosed area; keep pets inside at night. Pets must be attended to at all times.

ANOTHER BONUS

HUNGRY MOTHER STATE PARK – has one lakefront cabin and sentimentally called the honeymoon cabin. It's log cabin #2 if you want to request it specifically.

DOUTHAT STATE PARK - has cabins with a partial or seasonal view of the lake when the leaves are down.

STAUNTON RIVER STATE PARK - offers a shimmer off the river below from some of the cabins.

BELLE ISLE STATE PARK - features the Bel Air house and guest house. Both with magnificent views. The Bel Air Guest House is just 15 feet from a cove on Deep Creek, with scenic sunsets over the Rappahannock River. These specialty lodgings can be reserved only by calling 1-800-933-7275.

There are more than 300 cabins available to rent if you want to escape for a few days or a week-long vacation. Not all have water views, so ask when you call or look at the cabin map online before making your reservation.
