Vote to Secure Funding for Pocahontas State Park's Cabin Work Week
THANK YOU FOR VOTING - WE WON!
We are excited that Cabin Work Week at Pocahontas State Park has been selected as one of the top three candidates for a $2,000 grant through Preservation Virginia's Preservation Pitch program. To secure the grant, we need to get out the vote.
Through October 1, you can help Pocahontas State Park restore their historic CCC cabins by voting for the Cabin Work Week.
Pocahontas State Park, just minutes south of Richmond, VA, was originally built as the Swift Creek Recreational Demonstration Area by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s as part of President Roosevelt's plan to help the nation recover from the Great Depression.

Repairs needed on CCC group camp cabins at Pocahontas State Park
There are six group cabin areas built around two central dining halls. Each group site is comprised of about eight individual cabins with a larger lodge for group activities. These cabins were built by the CCC as a way for the Scouts, YMCA, churches, and other community groups to gain access to the outdoors. In fact, many of them are still used for that very purpose today. These are the only CCC built group cabins remaining in Virginia.
With over 100 buildings, Pocahontas has the largest number of CCC structures of any Virginia State Park listed on the National Historic Registry, and limited budgets haven't been able to keep up with maintenance. Some of the cabins have holes in the roof and siding; others need foundational work due to erosion that require immediate stabilization. In response, Cabin Work Week was launched.
We’ve received an overwhelming volunteer response, with 30-40 individuals committed to volunteering throughout the work week. While we are no longer accepting volunteers for this project, there are always opportunities for willing hands at the park--contact the park office for other volunteer projects at: 804-796-4021.
Funding is starting to come together as well. With support from the park, the Friends organization and other donors, we are so close to achieving our restoration goals--but still, we need to do more.
Don't let our volunteers sit idle or the hard work of the CCC slowly erode away. Vote today to help Pocahontas win the Preservation Pitch funding!
