RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia State Parks will feature kid-friendly programming in celebration of National Kids to Parks Day on May 17, encouraging kids to explore the outdoors and discover science, history, park stewardship and adventure.

Now in its 15th year, National Kids to Parks Day is sponsored by National Parks Trust and is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. This national day of outdoor play connects kids and families with our public lands while exploring educational opportunities and developing more active, healthy lifestyles.

Programs at Virginia State Parks include a variety of activities such as kayaking, hiking, fishing and crafting. Events vary by park location, and each event focuses on the natural and cultural features of the park. Among the offerings this year are:

  • James River State Park: Kids to Parks Day Fair. Celebrate with an all-day fair.
  • Natural Tunnel State Park: Nature Journaling. Discover the intersection of art, science and curiosity.
  • Shenandoah River State Park: Fishing with Friends. Join a ranger to fish along the Shenandoah River.
  • Smith Mountain Lake State Park: Nature Expo. Participate in exciting programs that connect kids with the outdoors.
  • Westmoreland State Park: Fossil Quest. Join a ranger and learn about the natural history.
  • Widewater State Park: Youth Archery 101. Learn introductory lessons as a first-time participant.
