Habitat: Mesic to dry upland forests and well-drained floodplain forests; over most of the state, it occurs on a wide range of extremely acidic to strongly calcareous soils but is more restricted to the latter in the Coastal Plain. Common in the mountains and Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
