In 1986, the Virginia Natural Heritage Program took up our mission to conserve Virginia’s biodiversity through Inventory, Protection and Stewardship. Natural Heritage scientists collect, organize and share information used to protect rare plants, animals, cave and karst features, and natural communities.
From discovering species new to science to establishing, managing and growing a statewide system of Natural Area Preserves that protect species and critical habitat, our work contributes to the knowledge of Virginia’s biodiversity and enhances our natural environment and quality of life.
Join us as we celebrate 40 years of identifying, protecting and managing Virginia’s most special animals, plants, natural communities and places!
