Ranger Conservation Corps: Empowering Tomorrow’s Rangers

Virginia State Parks is thrilled to introduce the Ranger Conservation Corps, an engaging initiative aimed at nurturing the future leaders in outdoor recreation, conservation and park management. We believe in empowering the next generations and providing them with the tools they need to make a positive impact on our natural world.

RCC integrates the established successes of the Virginia Service and Conservation Corps and the Park Ranger Career Development Program, thereby fostering a sustainable legacy of professional training and career advancement in conservation.

Interns will immerse themselves in a dynamic learning environment, acquiring practical experience across various facets of park operations, education and interpretation. They will play a pivotal role in championing the mission, culture and core values of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and Virginia State Parks, all while contributing to the preservation of natural beauty and promoting outdoor recreation.

Why join RCC?
  • Career pathways: Develop the skills and knowledge that lead to full-time employment in conservation, recreation and public service.
  • Hands-on experience: Train alongside park professionals in resource management, education and interpretation, operations and special capstone projects.
  • Meaningful impact: Contribute directly to the success of Virginia State Parks while building your own professional future.
  • Flexibility: Opportunities range from 12-week internships and in future years 9-month placements, with multiple career track options.

Program tracks

The Ranger Conservation Corps offers comprehensive training and hands-on experience across various aspects of park operations, equipping participants with valuable skills for future employment. Our interns immerse themselves in the culture, mission and values of Virginia State Parks and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Through this program, interns will acquire knowledge and make meaningful contributions to the success of Virginia State Parks. Additionally, the program fosters connections and opens pathways to careers in conservation, education, recreation, and public service. We are excited to announce the launch of two new tracks:

The Ranger Operations Program involves a diverse range of responsibilities for its participants. Typically, individuals in this program engage in a range of experiences that encompass maintenance tasks, customer service interactions, enterprise activities and educational interpretation. Participants also contribute to housekeeping efforts, public safety initiatives, administrative functions and resource management activities. This wide array of duties provides valuable experiences and skills essential for effective ranger operations. (480 hours)

Education and Interpretation Rangers encompass a diverse array of educational activities aimed at conveying the significance of the park's natural, historical and cultural resources. These activities may include, but are not limited to, guided history tours, children's programs, kayaking or canoe excursions, guided hikes, campfire gatherings and evening presentations. Participants will engage in park programs and volunteer initiatives, provide customer service and receive training in some maintenance or operations as part of their experience. (480 hours)
