Discover the ecological and economic importance of Virginia's favorite bivalve.  Oysters once existed in reefs so large that ships ran aground on them.  Today's harvest is 1% of what it was 100 years ago.  We will have interactive displays from organizations and businesses striving to increase their numbers.  The Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association, Virginia Institute of Marine Science and others will have displays about the work they do and information about this keystone creature of a healthy Chesapeake region.

Want to learn how to combine science and art?  Love nature and want to learn to capture it in a creative way?  The Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Marine Advisory Program invite you to participate in a FREE watercolor based nature journaling session at York River State Park.  Scientist with CBNEER~VA and VIMS will introduce the research being done at the park, and park staff will give an overview of the cultural resources on site.  Then, Anna Melhorn, William & Mary biology major and studio art minor, will lead a one hour watercolor and nature journaling session.  All art supplies will be provided including two nature journaling texts.  Limited registration ~ 15 participants.  Must be 12 years old and older to participate.  To register, send your name, email, and how many in your group to Sara Nuss at mcguire@vims.edu.

Experience the full moon by water and experience marsh life at night.  Various creatures, such as raccoons, can be found along the shoreline while owls call and fly above in the night sky.  Only canoes are rented for this trip and one paddler per boat should be experienced.  Call for reservation and price.

The brackish waters of the York River has a unique variety of fish and shellfish.  Follow the Woodstock Pond Trail to the river access point past shelter #3 to the left of the pond, Rangers will be using 2-man seine and other nets to discover what is in the water.

A new way to find treasure at your own pace.  Geocaching makes use of the Global Positioning System to help you find caches of park information and small gifts.  We will supply you with a GPS unit and the ranger will point you in the direction of a unique discovery.  .
