Celebrate Virginia history and culture with a tour of the Goodwin Gold Mine at Lake Anna! Follow the journey of prospector Stampmill Sam as we explore the lives of Virginia gold miners and the lasting legacy of the Virginia Gold Rush on the Lake Anna area. Dive deeper into the ancient history of our landscape and learn how forces of nature brought gold to the surface of Earth. Then, we’ll pan for gold in the same stream where prospectors once hunted for this elusive mineral.  

Please arrive at the Visitor Center 10 minutes before the start time of your tour. Guests will be collected from the Visitor Center for a 5-10 minute drive to the mine site. The tour will last 1 hour and includes 0.5 miles of hiking over hilly terrain with frequent stops. 

Wear sturdy walking shoes that can get wet. Long pants, sunscreen, and bug spray are highly encouraged. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 

Pre-registration is required and space is limited to 15 guests per tour. A payment of $3 per guest is due at the time of the event. We accept payment by cash or card. Please call the Park Office at 540-854-5503 to reserve your spot today!

On June 15, 1936, Virginia became the first state to open an entire park system of six parks on the same day. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Virginia State Parks hosts History and Culture Day every year on June 15, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the stories that make our parks special while enjoying the scenic beauty of its natural landscapes. From living history demonstrations  to ranger-led kayaking tours and guided nature walks, History and Culture Day offers special programs for visitors of all ages.
