Sustainable Trail Design and Maintenance Workday

Location of Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Historic Area
Main Park Address: Sky Meadows State Park, 11012 Edmonds Ln., Delaplane, VA 20144.

When

Sept. 26, 2026. 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Show your support for America’s public lands by joining Sky Meadows Rangers for a rewarding trail maintenance project on the Gap Run Trail. As you work alongside experienced volunteers, you’ll learn the SET principles: Sustainability, Effectiveness, and Traversability. These principles guide sustainable trail design and are essential to building safe, lasting access in public parks. As a group, we’ll perform essential drain maintenance and build a water diversion feature to help protect the trail from erosion and reduce its impact on natural resources and wildlife.

No experience is needed, and all tools and materials will be provided. Just bring water, wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes, and be ready for a 3-mile hike to the work site. Children are welcome with supervision.

Spend the day giving back to the land, learning new skills, and helping preserve the trails we all love for generations to come!

About National Public Lands Day

Virginia State Parks celebrates National Public Lands Day each September by inviting volunteers and visitors to take part in the largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the country. Join in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the state’s public lands through a variety of hands-on activities, including trail maintenance, tree plantings, invasive species removal, litter clean-ups and educational programs on the importance of conservation.
