Nighttime Vernal Pool Exploration

Location of Douthat State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Discovery Center
Main Park Address: Douthat State Park, 14239 Douthat State Park Rd., Millboro, VA 24460.

When

March 14, 2026. 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Join us for an evening adventure as we explore the fascinating world of vernal pools. We will start with a discussion on what vernal pools are, how they form, who lives in them, and why they play a vital role in the forest ecosystem. Then, we will take a short walk over to a nearby vernal pool to search for the elusive amphibians.

We’re heading out at night because many amphibians—like frogs and salamanders—are nocturnal, making this the perfect time to observe them in their natural habitat. This is a rain or shine event, and if it happens to rain, your chances of spotting salamanders are actually even higher.

While we will not be entering the vernal pool, the area around it is often muddy. We recommend wearing waterproof, closed-toe shoes to keep your feet dry and comfortable. Bring a flashlight, dress for the weather, and get ready to experience the magic of vernal pools after dark.

Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov
