With roots in the ancient world, and an art flourishing in the 18th century, caning became a symbol of wealth and statues throughout Europe. Across the ocean amongst the English colonies, distinct regions would develop varying methodology and style. Today, caning is practiced and appreciated in Southwest Virginia for its historical significance and Appalachian association. Join nationally renowned basket maker and caner Gary Carroll and learn to master this quintessential art form.
