The Eta Aquarids is an above average meteor shower capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet Halley, which has been observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from April 19 to May 28 with the peak in 2026 being the night of May 6th and morning of May 7th. The waning gibbous moon will block out fainter meteors, but brighter ones should still be visible. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius but can be seen anywhere in the sky.
Guests are welcome to gather on the Observation Field during this event and watch for meteors. We recommend chairs or blankets for stargazing during this event because of the wide-open space. Telescopes and binoculars are not necessary. Parking is available in the Visitor Center parking lot, and the restrooms will be open. This is a self-guided program and does not include ranger-led instruction.
