Great Backyard Bird Count at Sweet Run

Location of Sweet Run State Park in Virginia

Where

Sweet Run State Park, 11661 Harpers Ferry Road, Hillsboro, VA 20132.
Interpretive Center

When

Feb. 16, 2026. 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Sweet Run may not be the first place that comes to mind for a backyard bird count, but this land has supported an active community of farmsteads and residences since the 1840s. We invite you to connect with nature by joining the Great Backyard Bird Count, a global initiative led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada. Your observations will help scientists better understand bird populations before their spring migration. We will begin with feeder watching at the Interpretive Center, then slowly make our way approximately a quarter mile to the Park Offices.

Please dress in layers for the cold and bring binoculars if you have them (we will have extras to share). No experience is needed for this family-friendly event; an experienced birder will be present to assist with identifications and offer tips. For questions, email sweetrunvolunteer@dcr.virginia.gov or call 540-668-6230.
