When

Jan. 4, 2026. 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

January is Cavalry Month at Sailor's Creek. Be sure to check our other event listings, as we will offer cavalry themed programs every weekend throughout the month as part of our ongoing look at the mounted service in the Civil War.

Explore a full display of Civil War cavalry equipment at the Visitor Center on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of January. High quality reproduction items including a McClellan saddle, cavalry saber, carbine, and other tools used by mounted soldiers during the final campaigns of the war will be available for visitors to examine. These reproductions match the look and weight of original equipment, giving guests the chance to handle items without the fragility of museum pieces.

A ranger in a cavalry uniform will be on hand throughout the day to demonstrate how the equipment was carried and used and to discuss the daily experiences of soldiers in the saddle. A hands on table allows guests to take a closer look at the gear that shaped cavalry service during the retreat toward Appomattox. This open format program runs throughout the day and is suited for visitors of all ages.
