Why Leave the Leaves?

Location of Widewater State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Visitor Center
Main Park Address: Widewater State Park, 101 Widewater State Park Road, Stafford, VA 22554.

When

Nov. 15, 2025. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Fallen leaves blanket the ground, but what some people may call an eyesore, many animals call home. From salamanders and moths to toads and turtles, many animals rely on this blanket of leaves for warmth and protection in the freezing winter months. Come join a ranger on a guided hike as we search for some of these animals as they prepare for the cold months ahead of us.

As the days are getting shorter and the weather becomes cooler, make sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.

In case in inclement weather, please check this page prior to coming to the park. Cancellations will be posted by close of business the day before the program.
