Hike into 2026 at Sky Meadows

Start the New Year Outdoors at Sky Meadows State Park! Welcome 2026 with fresh air, scenic views, and Ranger-guided hikes. The park gates will open at 5:30 A.M., allowing you to catch the first sunrise of the year and enjoy a full day of outdoor adventure.

Sunrise Hike – 6:00 A.M. - Begin your year with an early morning hike to the Piedmont Overlook, where you’ll take in views of Crooked Run Valley as the sun rises. This hike departs from the Historic Area Parking Lot and covers approximately 2 miles of moderate trails. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp, preferably with a red lens or covering to help preserve night vision.

Look to the Future, Walk Through the Past – 1:00 P.M. - For a later start, meet Rangers at Mount Bleak House for a reflective and family-friendly hike along the Valley Trails. As you walk, you’ll explore the evolving story of farming at Sky Meadows, past, present, and future, while enjoying sweeping views of rolling pastures and deciduous forests. This hike is about 2 miles long and is suitable for all ages.

Please dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy and comfortable shoes, and bring water and snacks. Leashed pets are welcome on all hikes.

About First Day Hikes

Every year on Jan. 1, Virginia State Parks celebrates First Day Hikes. This nationwide initiative invites people to ring in the new year by connecting with nature and making lasting memories at a state park. Ranger-led and self-guided First Day Hikes are offered across the state, giving visitors of all ages and skill levels the chance to explore outdoors. January 1 is a Free Parking Day at all Virginia State Parks. (The admission fee at Natural Bridge still applies).
