Join us for a guided Winter Discovery Hike along the Buck Lick Trail and experience the quiet beauty of the forest in its cold-weather stillness. This short hike offers a unique opportunity to explore how the natural world adapts to winter. As we walk, we’ll take time to observe the subtle signs of life that persist through the season. You’ll learn about the hardy winter flora that remains green or dormant. We’ll also be on the lookout for animal tracks in the snow or soft ground—evidence of deer, foxes, squirrels, and other wildlife that remain active even in the chill. Along the way, we’ll discuss how different animals cope with winter, from hibernation and migration to the clever strategies of those that stay active year-round. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply looking for a peaceful winter outing, this hike offers a refreshing and educational experience for all ages.

Please meet at the Camp Store Parking Lot. The trail is less than half a mile long and follows easy but uneven terrain.

Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
