Where

Program Location: Discovery Center
Main Park Address: Douthat State Park, 14239 Douthat State Park Rd., Millboro, VA 24460.

When

Nov. 17, 2025. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Celebrate National Take a Hike Day with a relaxing, ranger-led walk along the scenic Heron Run Trail. This out-and-back trail follows the shoreline of Douthat Lake, offering peaceful views and a chance to connect with nature.

The hike is approximately 1.6 miles round trip and is rated easy, making it a great option for families and casual hikers. The single-track trail is mostly flat, with just a small hill at the beginning, and provides a smooth, enjoyable walk through the woods.

Along the way, you’ll have the unique opportunity to walk across the top of the dam and get an up-close look at the historic spillway. Participants will have to walk down a set of stairs to get off of the dam. A park ranger will guide the hike, pointing out interesting flora and fauna, and if we’re lucky, we might even spot waterfowl on the lake.

Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
