Happy Trails is the name of our park staff and volunteer collaboration to help keep the trails (over seven miles) in tip-top condition for all guests to enjoy throughout the changing seasons. This is a monthly on-call, volunteer event and green space initiative to better the park experience for all.

The goal of these fun and interactive events is to clear and tidy overgrowth, move logs, trim corridors, pick up debris, blow trails, and keep these trails open and accessible.

For more information, to express interest, or to ask any questions please feel free to contact our Chief Ranger - Visitor Experience and acting Volunteer Coordinator, via email: Shannon.carlin@dcr.virginia.gov

NOTE: Wear appropriate clothing for trail work including footwear, gloves and other PPE, bring snacks and water (refillable water), bagged lunch, binoculars, camera, and a great attitude!

Ranger Ronan leads the Happy Trails group in shaping trail side along Red Fox.

About National Public Lands Day

Virginia State Parks celebrates National Public Lands Day each September by inviting volunteers and visitors to take part in the largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the country. Join in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the state’s public lands through a variety of hands-on activities, including trail maintenance, tree plantings, invasive species removal, litter clean-ups and educational programs on the importance of conservation.
