Main Park Address: James River State Park, 104 Green Hill Dr., Gladstone, VA 24553.
When
June 13, 2026. 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Discover the role the James River played in shaping early Virginia by exploring one of its most important innovations—the batteau. Used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, this flat-bottomed wooden boat transformed transportation and commerce along the James, becoming the “semi-truck” of its time and helping communities across the region grow and thrive.
During this hands-on program, you’ll learn how batteaux were built, who operated them, and why they were essential to daily life in early Virginia. Then try your hand at constructing your own miniature batteau model to take home.
As part of Virginia State Parks History & Culture Weekend, this program highlights the ingenuity and river-based history that helped shape both the park and the surrounding area. It’s a meaningful way to connect with the past and experience a unique piece of James River heritage.
Please meet at Green Hill Pond. All materials provided. Suitable for all ages. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather and bring a water bottle with you. Parks are for everyone, please let us know if you need special accommodation.
