Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend - Songbird Stroll

Location of Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Campground, near bathhouse
Main Park Address: Smith Mountain Lake State Park, 1235 State Park Rd., Huddleston, VA 24104.

When

Sept. 14, 2025. 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Start your day with birdsong and discovery by joining a park ranger for a bird-watching walk. Learn how to identify common local bird species by sight and sound. We’ll cover the basics of birding, then take a short hike to look and listen for our feathered park residents.

If you don’t have binoculars, we’ll have some available to borrow. For access to a free digital field guide, we recommend downloading the Merlin Bird ID app by Cornell Lab on your smartphone before the walk. Please wear comfortable, sturdy shoes suitable for walking on uneven trails. We also suggest bringing water, a hat, and bug spray. You may want to bring a camera as well.

Space is limited, so pre-registration is required at the Visitor Center. This program is not recommended for children under six years old. This program is FREE.
