Homeschool Naturalists: Douthat Dwellers Owls

Join us at Douthat State Park for Homeschool Naturalists, a monthly outdoor education series designed for homeschool students of all ages. Each session explores a different nature-based topic through hands-on activities, guided discovery, and time in the great outdoors. 

This session of Homeschool Naturalist is Douthat Dwellers: Owls. We’ll explore the unique adaptations that make owls expert nocturnal predators, from silent flight to powerful night vision. We’ll learn about the owl species found right here in Virginia and listen to their unique calls. Then, we’ll dissect real owl pellets to investigate what owls eat and how they fit into the food web, using clues like bones and fur to identify their prey and better understand predator-prey relationships.

Programs run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please meet at the Discovery Center.

This is a family-friendly program — parents or guardians must stay with their children. Please dress for the weather and be prepared for outdoor conditions. This is a rain or shine event.

Homeschoolers get free parking by showing a copy of their Notice of Intent Form to park staff.
