National Public Lands Day

Where
Bear Creek Lake State Park, 22 Bear Creek Lake Rd., Cumberland, VA 23040.
Various locations
When
Sept. 27, 2025. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Public Lands are our legacy, so come follow your own adventure. Take a walk, wet a hook, or simply enjoy the outdoors. The park will offer two special opportunities today, one to help care for our environment and another to learn about our unique history.
Beginning at 10 a.m. and going until 11 a.m., the archery range is the location to assist us in removing invasive plant species. Invasives out-compete many native plants and in doing so alter the environment to the detriment of wildlife. We will supply the tools needed, but please bring your own work gloves. Please keep in mind that water and restrooms are not available at the range.
Later, understand how the park came to be and the renewal and rejuvenation it represents during a 45-minute ranger talk at the Legacy Wayside at 1 p.m.
About National Public Lands Day
Virginia State Parks celebrates National Public Lands Day each September by inviting volunteers and visitors to take part in the largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the country. Join in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the state’s public lands through a variety of hands-on activities, including trail maintenance, tree plantings, invasive species removal, litter clean-ups and educational programs on the importance of conservation. Parking fees are waived at most Virginia State Parks for National Public Lands Day (excludes Grayson Highlands and the admission fee at Natural Bridge and Southwest Virginia Museum).
