Girl Scouts Love State Parks - Tree Fun

Location of Hungry Mother State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Various areas throughout the Park
Main Park Address: Hungry Mother State Park, 2854 Park Blvd., Marion, VA 24354.

When

Sept. 13, 2025. 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Try out some tree fun by digging into the amazing science of trees and making cool tree crafts. Explore the connection between trees and people and help save trees in natural areas and in your own backyard. These programs are open to all guests, but if you are a Girl Scout Cadette and you do all the activities, you can receive your Legacy: Naturalist badge. (The badge is not provided.)

9 a.m. - Tree Hike on Clyburn Ridge. Hike approximately 2.5 miles and look for trees that produce something that helps humans. At the lookout on Clyburn Ridge, we will stop and draw a map of what trees you found and where or draw a special tree you found labeling all its parts from the top of its branches all the way down to its roots. Meet at Clyburn Ridge Trailhead.

1 p.m. - Crafting with Trees. Join an interpretive ranger as we scavenge around looking for discarded tree parts. As we look, we will discuss various activities on how humans use trees, good or bad. We may discuss logging, deforestation, clear-cutting, or maple syrup making, etc. Once we find enough tree "goodies" we will create a masterpiece from them. Meet at the Raider's Run Trailhead.

3 p.m. - Tree Planting Time. Let's join together and plant one tree in our park in remembrance of our time discovering trees. Come back throughout the next month and help keep it watered to allow for proper root growth. Meet at the Discovery Center.
