Snorkeling on the New River

Where
Program Location: Discovery Center - 116 Orphanage Dr. Max Meadows, Va. 24360
Main Park Address: New River Trail State Park, 116 Orphanage Dr., Max Meadows, VA 24360.
When
June 11, 2025. 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
While most of the adventure on the New River takes place above the water, there is no shortage of things to see below the water! With a snorkel and/or mask, swimmers can see wildlife, driftwood, odd-shaped rocks and stones, and more. A ranger will be available to guide participants on how to use a snorkel and where to swim. The river water is teeming with a variety of aquatic life including mussels, crayfish, numerous fish species, and macro-invertebrates.
Snorkels and under-water viewing equipment will be provided. We do not have wetsuits or water shoes. Please wear a bathing-suit and bring a change of clothes. Closed-toe footwear that can get wet and a life jacket are recommended. All participants under 15 years old must be supervised by an adult at all times. No registration is required.
Rain stirs up the river bottom and makes viewing underwater difficult and increases river flow rates. If conditions aren't safe the program will be cancelled. Please check the website for any cancellations. Meet along the river behind the Discovery Center in the historic village of Foster Falls.
