When
June 14, 2025. 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Paddle through time and experience the rich history of Douthat State Park under the stars. Celebrate 89 years of Virginia State Parks with a special evening program where you'll glide across the lake in a canoe by moonlight. As we paddle, a ranger will guide you through the park’s fascinating history, focusing on the Civilian Conservation Corps and their monumental work in building the park and lake during the Great Depression.
While on the water, we’ll also reflect on what the land was like before the lake was created; exploring the transformation from forest to the park we know today. Along the way, we’ll spot night-time wildlife, from frogs and fireflies to bats, and highlight the natural world that has flourished since the park's creation.
It’s a unique way to connect with Douthat's past, while experiencing the serenity and beauty of the park after dark. Space is limited, so please sign up in advance at the Park Office; the cost is $6 per participant. Children must be at least 4 years old. One participant per canoe must be at least 16 years old.
Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
