Let There Be LIGHT-ning Bugs
Where
Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.
Shelter 2
When
May 17, 2024. 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Warm nights combined with the lush, blooming meadows at Powhatan State Park make the perfect stage for dancing fireflies. Join us as we prepare for firefly season with insect experts from the Virginia Master Naturalists and the Xerces Society.
Many people have wonderful memories of twinkling fireflies, a.k.a. lightning bugs, but these amazing creatures (which are not flies, but actually beetles) face many environmental threats. You’ll learn about their fascinating life history and how to protect them, participate in a group firefly activity, and get a free finger light and mini firefly poster from the Xerces Society.
Bring a camp chair or blanket, red-setting headlamp or flashlight, and bug spray if you wish.
