International Beaver Day
Where
Bear Creek Lake State Park, 22 Bear Creek Lake Rd., Cumberland, VA 23040.
Bear Creek Hall
When
April 7, 2024. 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Celebrate International Beaver Day by getting to know Bear Creek Lake's noble 'gnawers.' We probably won't see a beaver, but the activities will give you a better understanding of these humble aquatic engineers. Meet at Bear Creek Hall at 10 a.m. for an overview of the American Beaver's physical adaptations that allow it to alter waterways and build their own homes. About 10:30 a.m., we will walk down a forest trail to see a beaver dam and see how the beavers change areas into something magnificent that provides a home and habitat for a variety of other species while maintaining the health of our watershed. We'll return to the hall to watch beavers on film, including a heart-warming look at the life of a beaver family. The films will start about 11:30 a.m. and the event will conclude about 1 p.m.
The walk will be over fairly level terrain with a couple short inclines. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Feel free to bring a lunch to enjoy while watching the movie.
