Sunset and Night Sky Party with the National Park Service
Where
Machicomoco State Park, 3601 Timberneck Farm Road, Hayes, VA 23072.
Interpretive Area: Hillside Steps
When
May 11, 2024. 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Star gaze with us and become a "Night Sky Explorer" Junior Ranger! Our partners from the National Park Service will join us for this event, where young people can earn a special Junior Ranger patch. As we watch the sun set, we will learn about how Indigenous people, colonial navigators, and modern scientists use the night sky to find their way in the dark. As darkness falls, we will observe the stars above, note the phase of the moon, and identify planets and other objects that are visible in the sky. Before the event, we encourage you to download a stargazing app on your mobile device - there are many applications available that allow us to identify constellations, planets, and more using GPS technology! Registration recommended. Program limited to 30 participants. Register at the Machicomoco park office or by calling at 804-642-2419.
