Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with High Bridge Trail State Park as we delve into the fascinating story of how an Irish American unit marked the occasion during the American Civil War. Join us for a special event where we'll uncover the unique history of these brave soldiers and their St. Patrick's Day experience amidst the turmoil of war.
As part of the commemoration, we'll embark on a two-mile bike ride to the site where General Thomas Smyth, an often-overlooked Irish hero, was mortally wounded in the fighting outside of Farmville on April 7th, 1865. Discover the remarkable tale of Smyth's sacrifice and learn about his significance beyond our local community.
Following the bike ride, we'll return to 3 Roads Brewing Company for a question-and-answer session with park staff, who will provide further insights into the event and the historical context surrounding it. Don't miss this opportunity to honor St. Patrick's Day and pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Civil War. Join us for a memorable and enlightening experience at High Bridge Trail State Park.
Special Note: Should the weather be unfavorable, the Lead Interpretive Ranger from High Bridge Trail State Park will hold a talk on the topics of the Irish Brigade and their gathering of 1863 and the unsung Irish hero, Gen. Thomas Smyth who was mortally wounded outside of Farmville in 1865.
