Visitor Center

When

June 15, 2024. 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Natural Bridge. Come see how this Founding Father set the stage for the park today. When Jefferson first visited the Bridge in 1767, he was overwhelmed by what he called "the most sublime of Nature's works." He purchased it on July 5th, 1774 in order to preserve it in its natural state.

Park rangers will put on programs throughout the day, featuring history talks detailing Jefferson's early studies of the Bridge, his family visits, and the property caretaker Patrick Henry (a freedman and frontiersman who even paid him a visit at Monticello). Also, try your hand at painting the Bridge as Jefferson's French friends did during the American Revolution. For more details, call (540) 254-0795.
