Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

To celebrate National Kids to Parks Day, the park is offering a Children's Prowl the Powell program. Has your child ever wanted to learn what call the Powell River Home? Children will learn what calls the river home as well as learning about the birds and other wildlife that live around the waterway. Led by rangers and volunteers, this mild, fully accessible, and educational walk follows the Powell River on nearly three miles of paved pathway, where you're certain to see an abundance of Southwest Virginia wildlife.
Participants are asked to wear appropriate clothing for the weather and comfortable walking shoes. The program will be held rain or shine. Registration is not required for this program.
