This presentation will be at the Hillsman House at Sailor’s Creek on both Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25, both beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Born in Amelia County in 1867, Dr. Moton was raised in nearby Rice, VA. After rising to an administrator’s position at Hampton Institute, he was named principal of the Tuskegee Institute in 1915 after the death of founder Booker T. Washington.
Dr. Moton’s legacy continued through the former Robert Moton High School, now a National Historical Landmark and museum, as the birthplace of America's student-led Civil Rights Revolution and today with the Gloucester Institute, which is the birthplace of the United Negro College Fund.
