Pine Needle Basket Weaving Workshop with National Park Service

Location of Machicomoco State Park in Virginia

Where

Machicomoco State Park, 3601 Timberneck Farm Road, Hayes, VA 23072.
Interpretive Area: Picnic Shelter 2

When

June 29, 2024. 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Machicomoco is home to a grove of longleaf pine trees, a useful and historic tree that was once widespread across the southeastern United States. Longleaf pines are fire-adapted, and their growth was encouraged by Native peoples who valued them as resin-producers and for their long needles that are ideal for basket-making. Join us for this hands-on workshop where you will create your own basket using pine needles. Requiring only a sewing needle, thick thread, and patience, you can replicate this craft at home with needles you forage in your backyard! All materials will be provided, recommended for ages 14+. The workshop will be led by our friends from the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, part of the National Park Service. Registration required due to limited materials. Program limited to 20 participants. Register at the Machicomoco park office or by calling at 804-642-2419
